Nurturing Resilience in the Nervous System

In the pursuit of mental and emotional well-being, the concept of maintaining a regulated nervous system often takes precedence. However, delving deeper into the intricacies of neurology and psychology, experts are increasingly highlighting the importance of fostering resilience within the nervous system.

Resilience, in this context, refers to the ability of the nervous system to adapt and bounce back from stressors, challenges, and discomfort. Rather than striving for a constant state of regulation (which realistically, is not possible), the focus shifts towards cultivating inner strength and adaptability.

The process of building resilience involves navigating between states of stress and regulation. When faced with challenging situations, the nervous system undergoes stress responses that activate physiological and psychological reactions. These reactions, though uncomfortable, are essential for growth and development.

By learning to navigate through periods of stress and then returning to a state of equilibrium, individuals train their nervous systems to become more resilient. This process involves acknowledging discomfort, embracing challenges, and allowing space for growth.

Over time, this intentional practice of toggling between stress and regulation builds resilience within the nervous system; mind and body. Just as muscles grow stronger with exercise, the nervous system becomes more adept at handling adversity and bouncing back from setbacks.

Ultimately, nurturing resilience in the nervous system empowers individuals to face life's inevitable stressors with greater ease and grace. Supporting them to adapt, learn, and grow from challenging experiences, fostering a deeper sense of inner strength and well-being.

Ask yourself…

  • What are three practices that I can do that will support me to return to a state of regulation once a stress response has been triggered?
For example: breathing exercises, time alone, a bath, meditation, screaming into a pillow - whatever works for you!

  • What is a mantra or affirmation that can support me with acknowledging the thoughts and feelings that arise when I am being triggered and/or in a state of stress?
For example: This is an uncomfortable situation and I am choosing to stay present and with my breath.

  • How can you re-frame “stress”? If you need support with this I highly recommend watching the video below!

  • How do I currently navigate stress? What do I like about how I deal with stress? What would I like to improve upon in regards to how I deal with stress?

  • What is one action step that I can take today or this week to close the gap between how I currently respond to stressful situations and how I desire to respond to them?

  • How will I keep myself accountable to implementing these changes and prioritizing building resilience in my nervous system?
